What is a Home Where You Can Breathe

~Future Spaces Considered from the Sound Environment Perspective~

Recently, we've been hearing more often the complaint: "I can't seem to recover from fatigue even when I'm at home."

Housing performance has improved significantly. Insulation has enhanced, equipment has become quieter, and homes are incomparably more comfortable than in the past.

Yet still, people feel restless, sleep lightly, and don't feel refreshed.

We consider this issue from a somewhat different perspective.

Home is Fundamentally a Place of Recovery

A home is not merely a place to live.

It is a place to restore the body that has been used in society.

If the body remains unconsciously tense even inside the home, adequate recovery cannot occur.

So, what causes the body to tense up?

Light, temperature, air, and visual environment. And another factor: sound.

Even When Quiet, Tension Remains

Modern homes have advanced noise control measures.

However, in reality, sounds such as:

 ・Air conditioning fan noise
 ・Electronic device operating sounds
 ・Distant traffic noise
 ・Indoor reflected sounds

still exist.

These are not loud sounds.

But in most cases, their sources are clearly identifiable, and they arrive persistently from specific directions.

The human brain unconsciously continues to track those directions.

This is a danger-detection mechanism that never completely stops.

As a result, the body maintains a slight state of tension, and breathing tends to become shallow.

Spaces Where Breathing Becomes Deep

Conversely, when we are in a forest or by the seaside, our breathing naturally becomes deeper without conscious effort.

In such places, sound doesn't assert itself from specific directions, but exists naturally throughout the entire space.

The brain no longer needs to track sound sources and can more easily determine safety.

At that moment, breathing naturally becomes deeper.

Here lies an important hint for home design.

Considering Sound as "Environment" Rather Than "Equipment"

Until now, sound in residential design has primarily been treated as a subject for soundproofing and sound insulation.

In other words, the approach has been to "reduce external sounds."

However, going forward, we believe it's necessary to take another step and adopt the perspective of "organizing the very way sound exists within a space."

Sound, like light and air, is an element that determines the quality of space.

A home where you can breathe easily is not necessarily just a quiet home.

It is a home with a Sound Environment where the body can feel at ease.

Our Role

M's System has been delivering sound through speaker products until now.

However, today we are reconsidering sound not merely as a matter of equipment, but as part of the living environment.

Organizing the Sound Environment is not a luxury.

It is one of the foundations supporting physical recovery in future urban living.

Whether you can unconsciously take a deep breath when you return home.

From this perspective, we want to reconsider the quality of living spaces.

We are working on creating breathable spaces from the Sound Environment perspective.
