I stopped in my tracks when I saw the words "Praised by Richard Dawkins."
Before the book's title, before the promotional blurb on the obi (though this was certainly part of it), Dawkins' name caught my eye.
A long-awaited reunion (?) - was it 40 years ago?
"The Selfish Gene," a work by an evolutionary biologist (or perhaps a zoologist?), was quite narrowly focused for a book aimed at the general public, yet it became a bestseller thanks to Dawkins' handsome photograph and that catchy title.
"Sentient: How the New Science of the Senses is Changing How We See the World" (by Jackie Higgins) was written by this beloved disciple of Dawkins.
Yes, we talk about the five senses, or the sixth sense, but she suggests we might have about 12 senses.
Many people assume hearing is all about the ears, but when they experience M's System speakers, they often react with feelings of being enveloped throughout their entire body, or sensing that each individual cell is listening - realizing that hearing involves the skin, which is also the human body's largest organ, serving as a sensory receptor.
I thought to myself, "Jackie, you're just realizing this now?" as I flipped through the pages, intending to start reading from Chapter 3, "Great Grey Owls and Human Hearing." But then I saw three lines at the chapter opening: "Owls can capture prey even at night. This is because their 'hearing' also serves as their 'vision.' And in fact, humans also use their ears for spatial recognition."
I thought this touched on something quite profound, so I decided to go back and read from Chapter 1 again.
